New Publications and Resources

  • In June, Switzerland submitted a notification of final regulatory action on lead compounds in paints and varnishes under the Rotterdam Convention, joining previous notifications from Cameroon and Morocco. A post from IPEN welcomes the notification and provides further details on its significance: “Chemicals listed under the Convention are subject to a Prior Informed Consent (PIC) procedure, whereby exporting countries must notify recipient countries and receive explicit consent before the substance can be exported. With countries from two regions now calling for the listing, the proposal is on the path to be on the agenda at the next Conference of Parties (COP-13) in 2027.”

  • Recordings from CGD’s First Annual Research Conference on Global Lead Exposure are now available here. To watch the second day’s sessions, click the “Day 2” tab on the event page.

  • CGD’s Caroline Mallory and Lee Crawfurd also provide a roundup of the papers presented at the conference in a blog article here.

  • New research identifies traditional kansa (bronze) and pital (brass) metalware from Nepal as the source of lead exposure in a pregnant woman and her family in New York City.

Other Announcements

  • By popular request, we are creating an optional “lead contacts list” to help connect with colleagues from the lead conference and broader community. To opt in, please submit this Google form with your contact details. Shortly after submission, you will be granted access by email to a live Google sheet with other participants. Feel free to add any information you wish, and in turn omit any information you do not want shared in this way.

  • The University of Washington is now accepting applications for its Implementation Science in Global Health Summer Institute (details and registration here). Implementation Science is an emerging field of research on how to scale up health interventions shown to be effective.
